While German engineering is supposed to be so excellent, their naval efforts don't match the idea we have of German quality engineering. U-boats were uncomfortable leaky death-traps. The Imperator couldn't float straight. The German Navy has never been a dominant force like the British, the Dutch, the Spanish and even the French. And nobody has a navy like the universally disdained Americans. From day one we started out kicking butt with the most powerful frigates in the world. Today, America rules the seas. Korea and Japan have established themselves as sea powers with their huge trading vessels. Britain still has a respectable navy. Germany has never managed to dominate for some reason. It may be a simple as their short coastline. I kind of wonder if it's not their fixation on their land-based military tradition.
